In my own experience, I’ve come to appreciate the value of small-group travel. I’m not talking about typical tourist traps where large groups swarm around popular attractions. Instead, I’m referring to intimate groups of 8 to 16 individuals who explore foreign countries together, immersing themselves in the local culture, food, and hospitality. Many times these journeys are led by passionate local guides who are eager to share their knowledge and love for their home country.
You get the best of both worlds.
Depending on the specific itinerary, tour company, or country you’re visiting, small-group travel experiences can vary. However, many of these trips offer a great balance of independent time to explore and structured activities to make sure you don’t miss out on any of the key experiences in the destinations. Typically, there will be plans for group dinners, but they are always optional, so you have the freedom to choose how involved you want to be with the group. Personally, I love having the option to explore a city on my own or with my husband during the day and then come back in the evening to share our experiences over a group dinner with our fellow travellers.
Meeting People with Common Interests.
Through my small group travel experiences, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting incredible individuals from around the world who I now consider friends. While not everyone in the group may be a perfect match for your personality, you’re bound to share at least one common interest – the country you’re visiting and a passion for travel. Traveling alongside people from different backgrounds can offer a unique opportunity to gain new perspectives and appreciate a country’s culture through a different lens. Engaging in thought-provoking conversations and realizations with fellow travelers is just one of the many rewards of small group travel.
The Details are Taken Care Of
When you explore as part of a small group there is no need to worry about the travel details. You don’t have to worry about getting on the wrong train or if the area you are exploring is safe. Your accommodations have been verified, your train tickets purchased, your itinerary vetted and you have a local expert willing to share their vast knowledge with you anytime. As a solo traveller, it can sometimes be lonely travelling somewhere you’ve never been. Travelling with a small group can give you the comfort of knowing you’re not truly alone in a foreign country.
You Experience the Destination with a Local Expert
In my experience, having a knowledgeable local guide is one of the highlights of small group travel. These guides are passionate about their home country and take pride in showing it off to visitors. They can provide invaluable insights into the local culture, recommend hidden gems that you might not find on your own, and help you avoid tourist traps. I’ve always been impressed by their vast knowledge and eagerness to assist in any way possible. It’s important to show appreciation for their hard work by tipping them generously.
